Kayaking and backpacking in the South of Baikal
Duration: 8 days, 7 nights
Our 90 km long adventure starts from Peschanaya bay one of the best-known nature landmarks of Lake Baikal and a popular recreation site. This is the only place in Siberia where the average annual temperature does not drop below the freezing mark and no wonder it is often referred to as Siberian Riviera. The main attractions of Peschanaya bay are its sandy beaches, walking pine trees and gorgeous cliffs. But there are others such as grottos and sea caves that can be accessed only from water. That is why we consider a combined kayaking and backpacking itinerary to be the best way to demonstrate all the beauties of Baikal.

Route
Day 1
Arrival in Irkutsk. Meeting and assistance at the airport. Transfer to your guest house and accommodation. After having some rest you will invited for a brief city tour. Meals at personal expenses.

Day 2
Transfer to the boat station. Boat trip (4 hours) to a popular health resort, located in the picturesque Peschanaya bay on the western side of lake Baikal. As we get to the spot you are welcome to help our guide cook lunch and assemble the kayaks. On a good day one can go swimming or ascend the Big Bell rock a natural view point - from where admire the transparency of lake Baikal waters. Overnight in tents (LD).

Day 3
After breakfast well load all out belongings into the kayaks and set off south. There are hardly any bays on this route section however random gravel beaches provide you enough hiding places in case you are caught by a storm. The goal of the day is to reach the mouth of Yelovka river (approx 20 km from the starting point). To save time during the day we shall not cook proper meals for lunch. Instead well have some dry food and boil hot water on a camp fire. All meals included. (BLD)

Day 4
Our next destination is Bolshoye Goloustnoye village *. As we approach the village the coastline changes from gravel beaches and forest to rocky cliffs. This is where one can really appreciate the advantage of a kayak. Had we been backpacking on this section of the route wed have to climb over all those endless rocks. After we have bypassed the last cliff well paddle around a vast river delta and set up a camp. Before dinner well need to dry out our kayaks and prepare them for transportation to the city. Dinner and overnight in tents. (BLD)

* One of the first settlements of Russian explorers on the Lake. The village was founded in 1673. Later a small boat station was built that provided a safe crossing of goods on to the other side of lake Baikal.

Day 5
The backpacking part of the route runs on moderate elevations without considerable ups and downs. The trail often goes down to the water so on a hot day one can go for a swim. Lunch en route. Overnight in tents opposite a beautiful valley * (BLD). Daily trip 20 km

The area is famous for archeological sites and amazing landscape. There are a number of small caves that once were home for our ancestors.

Day 6
A pleasant journey along the coastline with only one serious obstacle on the way. At first sight this steep rock called Scripper seems insurmountable if it were not for a narrow path that avoids the most dangerous places. Overnight on a forest opening right at the waterfront. (BLD) Daly trip 15 km.

Day 7
The last day of our hiking adventure. In the afternoon we reach our final lap Listvyanka settlement. Accommodation in a guest house (*). Dinner and sauna included. Sightseeing the village (optional). (BL)

Day 8
After breakfast transfer to the airport/ railway station. (B)
